Where do we actually begin (apart from at the beginning)?

ok now i'm a little confused, I've heard we all start off on the outskirts of the Universe and are 'encouraged' to make our way to the centre, BUT, I heard on some Official Gaming Site that we all sporn in the same 'Galaxy'!!! so which is true? and does this mean we're attempting to get to the centre of the host Galaxy rather than 'The Universe' (the Site of the actual Big Bang)
p.s. Obviously there are a gazillion Galaxy's on the 'outskirts' of the known expanding Universe, so are we actually all spawning/beginning in just one of those?.  http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/errr.png

Re: Where do we actually begin (apart from at the beginning)?

We all start in the same galaxy and are trying to get to the center of that galaxy. Something there should lead to another galaxy. All the galaxies are in the same universe. I don't even think it would be possible to get to the center of the universe because it's so big. There is a video on YouTube where Sean Murray explains everything. I'll see if I can find it and post the link for it.

Here is the short clip from the Game Informer podcast with Sean Murray answering the question about universe or galaxy.

ty Petreak for taking the time to reply http://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons/happy.png
 - it all makes sense now
And I think thats where a lot of confusion has been creeping in! because there's lot's of quotes from the many YouTube Postings which state that we're encouraged to get to the 'Centre of the Universe' rather than the Centre of the Galaxy!! (which is what we're supposed to be aiming for)
Obviously that in itself will be no easy undertaking; Its pretty hard at times to fully grasp the scale of things I guess.

Re: Where do we actually begin (apart from at the beginning)?

No problem! Yeah, the scale of this game blows my mind! I've been waiting for a game like this my whole life and I'll be 45 in October, so I've been waiting a long time. LOL! The first space exploration game I ever played was Starflight. Not sure if you know that one, but it was a galaxy you explored and every star had planets you could scan and land on to explore. It was awesome for it's time. You could interact with alien races and you had to improve your skills for your communication officer to be able to understand alien languages. There are some similarities to NMS for sure. Starflight was very small scale though compared to NMS.
I think part of the confusion on galaxy and universe has come from one of the recent videos with Sean and IGN where he misspoke and said center of the universe, when he meant galaxy. He has been pretty consistent in the past though. I've always known we are playing in a Universe with multiple galaxies and are trying to get to the center of the starting galaxy. I cringe when I watch a new video or something and they say we are trying to get to the center of the Universe. LOL! In the very first video released, it list everything in the game that is procedural, and Galaxy was one things in the list.

well I got 10yrs on you my friend (in my fifties) - one of my ealiest games was 'Elite' on an Acorn Electron 8 bit PC, I think Sean Murray mentions this Game in one of his interviews? There was Trading, Fighting and Docking with a rotating Space Station all in the Game.
My son's studying Computer Graphics at the moment and find's all this thoroughly amazing (The History 'n such)

Re: Where do we actually begin (apart from at the beginning)?

I know about Elite, but I never got to play it.
You and I are probably the oldest on here. LOL! I've been gaming my whole life pretty much. Well, for as long as I can remember anyway.
I probably wouldn't have the patients to play some of those original games now a days though. I've gotten ruined by the modern graphics. I did have fun with Starflight, even though it looks horrible by today's standards, but as a kid I thought it looked great! I guess our tastes change over time.
